RPNRC Releases Tools to Prepare for the RPNCE

Posted April 24, 2018

The Registered Psychiatric Nurse Regulators of Canada (RPNRC), in collaboration with our exam testing partner, Yardstick Assessment Strategies (YAS), is pleased to release two new tools* to assist Internationally Educated Nurse applicants and Canadian psychiatric nursing graduates to prepare to write the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada Examination (RPNCE).

About the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada Examination (RPNCE)

The RPNCE is the property of the Registered Psychiatric Nurse Regulators of Canada (RPNRC), which is composed of the four Registered Psychiatric Nurse regulatory authorities for British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Each Canadian provincial regulatory authority is responsible to ensure that all entry-level registered psychiatric nurses within its jurisdiction meet an acceptable level of competence before they are licensed to practice as registered psychiatric nurses. This level of competence is measured partly by the RPNCE. This process ensures that all registered psychiatric nurses practicing in those jurisdictions meet a common standard.

The RPNCE is a mandatory multiple-choice, paper and pencil exam that has been designed to test the entry level competence and safety to practice of new graduates and internationally educated applicants who are seeking registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) in Canada.

Study Guide

The Study Guide assists Internationally Educated Nurse applicants and Canadian psychiatric nursing graduates

who will be writing the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada Examination (RPNCE) by providing information about the RPNCE, test taking and study strategies, and a bibliography of study resources. Information about the optional Practice Test and how the test might be used to prepare for the RPNCE is also included.

All exam candidates are encouraged to review the Study Guide .  The Study Guide is available, free of charge, on the RPNRC website and on the websites of each provincial regulator.

Optional On-Line Practice Test

Exam candidates who wish to prepare for the RPNCE by having hands-on experience with examination questions and by simulating some of the exam writing conditions can purchase the optional on-line Practice Test.  Although the RPNCE is not administered on-line, candidates can simulate the exam writing conditions by taking the Practice Test without the benefit of books, notes, or other aids and by strictly adhering to the time limit.

The Practice Test questions are similar to those that appear on the RPNCE. The questions represent common health situations of the population in those contexts or environments where entry-level registered psychiatric nurses would work. A key feature of the Practice Test is that, for each practice question, rationales are provided for correct and incorrect answers. After completing the 100-question Practice Test, candidates are provided an examination review report that contains a summary and diagnostic information related to how they performed on the practice test.

Exam candidates wishing to purchase the on-line Practice Test can do so at https://rpncetestprep.ysasecure.com/

* Candidates use the information, materials and suggestions in these prep tools at their own risk. Neither the Registered Psychiatric Nurse Regulators of Canada (RPNRC) nor Yardstick Assessment Strategies (YAS) assumes any responsibility for candidates’ performance on the Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada Examination.
