Alberta Relaunch Guidelines for Self-Employed Nurses Released by Nursing Regulators


On April 30, 2020 the Government of Alberta announced a three-stage Relaunch Strategy for loosening restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. This strategy allows for a three stage reopening of Alberta’s economy and includes medical and healthcare settings. Stage 1 of the Alberta Relaunch Strategy allows non-essential healthcare services to recommence under the guidance of public health and the regulatory colleges.

Collaboration between nursing regulators

In Alberta, the three regulatory bodies for the nursing professions are the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA), the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA), and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). The Guidelines for Self-Employed Nurses during Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy was developed collaboratively by the CRPNA, CARNA, and CLPNA.

Complying with Public Health Orders

As part of Order 16 regulators were asked to create guidelines for self-employed healthcare practitioners during Alberta’s Relaunch.

Guidelines for Self-Employed Nurses during Alberta's Relaunch Strategy  

This document will guide nurses in self-employed practice to focus on six main practice expectations:

·         Communication Related to COVID-19 for Business Owners, Staff, and Volunteers
·         COVID-19 Specific Workplace Considerations
·         Screening
·         Symptomatic Clients
·         Staff, Volunteers, or Clients Diagnosed with COVID-19
·         Prevention of Transmission of COVID-19

Reopening requires all of us to move forward together by practicing physical distancing and other measures that reduce our risk of exposure to or transmission of COVID-19.

Self-employed nurses can continue to ensure the safety of clients and reduce the transmission of COVID-19 by following the guidance laid out in this document. Reopening relies on public health strategies, physical distancing, self- isolation, and keeping track of how someone infected might have infected other people, among other business practices.
