Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada (RPNC) Examination

To qualify for registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse all initial applicants must pass the registration exam approved by the board.  The approved registration exam is the RPNC.

The RPNC examination is a multiple-choice, paper and pencil exam that has been designed to test the entry level competence and safety to practice of the applicant who is seeking registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse in Alberta.

The examination is offered three (3) times per year, January, May and October .

January 2022 RPNC Exam - POSTPONED

As COVID-19 cases continue to surge across Canada due to the Omicron variant, the Registered Psychiatric Nurse Regulators of Canada have decided to postpone the January 26, 2022 writing of the Registered Psychiatric Nurse Canadian Examination (RPNCE).

The examination date will be rescheduled to March 9, 2022; additional details and information will be provided in the upcoming weeks. Candidates registered for the January 26 exam sitting have been notified, and their exam registration will be automatically transferred to the new exam date.

We understand and appreciate that the postponement of the exam may create some inconvenience, but believe it is a necessary step to protect the health and safety of employees, volunteers and exam candidates.

Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada Examination will become a computer-based test in 2022

The Registered Psychiatric Nurse of Canada Examination (RPNCE) tests entry-level competence and safety to practice of applicants seeking registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) registration in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

In May 2022, the RPNCE will transition from the current pencil-and-paper exam to a computer-based exam. Instead of having to travel to Edmonton to write the exam, candidates will schedule their exam at testing centers across the country. This is an exciting step to modernize exam delivery and improve accessibility for exam writers.

While applicants will complete the exam on a computer, the content of the exam will continue to be multiple choice and questions will follow the existing test blueprint.

Be sure to check our website regularly for updates with additional details about this transition.

Please note: This change will not impact the October 2021 or January 2022 writings of the RPNCE.
