CRPNA Provincial Council Election 2018

Candidates Information

         Anthony Brannen, RPN

I would be grateful to be re-elected to CRPNA Provincial Council for the 2018-2020 term. I am currently the President of the Council and just ending the first year of a two year term in that position. I believe it would be important to complete the term as President in order to maintain consistency in leadership for Council. As a previous member of Council I bring a historical perspective to help provide some background to issues for those members new to council.

I graduated as an RPN from Wascana Institute in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1977 and have held a variety of positions in Saskatchewan and Alberta since that time – as an RPN in acute, rehabilitation, community adolescent and emergency psychiatry; as a program manager in community in Edmonton, Executive Director of the RPNAA (1997 – 2001); Director of Health Services in two rural health authorities, quality consultant for AHS, and most recently as the Administrator of two rural health care facilities along with responsibility for a community based program supporting people with long term mental illness living in the community.

Over the past 30 years I have volunteered in several capacities – Cub and Scout Leader, Church Council, Marriage Preparation Leader, CRPNA Provincial Council. I believe that my experience in a wide variety of psychiatric nursing work environments, my previous experience on Provincial Council and my experience as a healthcare manager and administrator working within large health care organizations, and with municipal and provincial governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders has provided me with the perspective and ability to work effectively as a member of the CRPNA Provincial Council. In addition to RPN, my credentials include a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters in Health Services Administration degree from the University of Alberta.

As a Provincial Council member I would like to continue to work with the regulatory bodies in Western Canada to ensure consistent standards of practice for RPNS and continued barrier free movement between provinces, to continue to work with RPNC to seek opportunities for RPNs to work within our profession in Eastern Canada and to continue to work within Alberta to add education seats by developing additional psychiatric nursing education programs.

       Tonya Ratushniak, RPN

I am so grateful to have such an amazing career and the opportunities that being a registered psychiatric nurse has given me. Currently I work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose on an acute 10-bed inpatient psychiatry unit. Although Camrose is a city, we are considered a rural hospital, and I love the diversity and challenges that comes with being rural. Besides working with a great team at the hospital I enjoy working with the current board members of the CRPNA. I have been a member of the CRPNA board for three years now and I am currently the President-Elect. For me it is always interesting to find out how things run and what our profession is working towards. I am also enrolled at Douglas College to get my Bachelor’s in Science – Psychiatric Nursing Degree, I do believe this is where our profession is heading and hopefully, Canada-wide portability will soon be recognized.

I also enjoy volunteering and I am continually thankful for the opportunities that have come my way and the great people I have met. This June I received the AHS President’s Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievements in People Excellence. It was a lovely day at Fort Edmonton Park and I am lucky enough to be part of an amazing team that is Young Medical Minds. Also this June I went to Ottawa as I now sit on the board that designs our Nation Psychiatric Nursing Exam as the Alberta representative. Last year in July I got to go Ottawa and sit on a National board of 8 people that wrote/designed our psychiatric prep guide for nursing students that is now available on-line. Previously to that, I have been invited to Ottawa 4 times to help write the nursing exam questions (item writer) with our members from all four provinces. It is an incredible experience and career highlight and I would strong encourage anyone to embrace and apply for this opportunity. Locally, I am often a guest speaker for mental health at universities, schools and businesses. I am so excited about this career that I love to share my enthusiasm and knowledge.

Personally, my husband and I have three awesome boys (Merik 21, Jake 17, and Isaak 15) and we live on an acreage just outside of Camrose. We also this month introduced a new puppy named Beau into our home and he is such a cute little gomer. I enjoy traveling, cooking and baking for various occasions. I love a good potluck. This career allows you to work with many fabulous people, learn every day, and make a difference in someone’s life. We are a specialty within the nursing profession that needs to be further celebrated and explored.

         Patrick Cruz, RPN

I would like to re-run for another 2 years as a provincial council member.

I have 10 years of experience in mental health as both an RPN and a psychiatric aide in the fields of adult forensics, youth forensics and high risk youth in hospital settings. I'm currently pioneering, with one other RPN, a very unique position of being a Registered Psychiatric Nurse providing mental and physical health support to Adult students in a College setting. I feel that my wide experience range has given me better insight into the potential risks the public faces regarding mental health care and has shown me the struggles that RPNs face both in hospital settings and in the community. I find that within the community settings there is a need for better public understanding and advocacy of our role and the specialized care that we provide to the public. Because of the unique position and the growing pains that I am currently facing with it I feel I have gotten a better grasp on RPN advocacy as well as scope and standards of RPN practice.

During my time with the CRPNA council I have been involved with the executive committee, the awards and recognition committee, the finance committee and the public relations group. Recently I was elected as the Treasurer of the council and I am proud to say as Treasurer that the CRPNA continues to hold a strong financial position.

I feel that, despite being on the council for the last 3 years, there is still so much to learn both as my role as Treasurer and as my role as council member. I also understand that many of the members that were recently elected are brand new to the CRPNA council so my experience as a council member will be a boon to them as I recently experienced the same learning process that they are undertaking currently. So, I feel that by both being slightly experienced and still relatively new I can help bridge the gap between very experienced council members and those that are brand new.
I hope you feel the same way and re-elect me to become a council member.

       Judy Negrey, RPN

Over my 30 years as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse I have worked in central and northern zones of Alberta Health Services including the cities of Calgary and Edmonton.  I have served on CRPNA council in the 90’s and then returned three years ago.  I have held positions on the executive as treasurer and executive officer and as a general council member.  I believe I bring not only the experience of a seasoned RPN, having not only worked in Alberta throughout that time but also within a diverse fields of mental health i.e. in-hospital and community nursing and in the following areas: Psychiatric Intensive Care, Acute Adult Admission units and psychiatric rehabilitation, Forensic Nursing, Community Mental Health nursing and counseling, Private Practice with a focus on mental health wellness and education, and most recently specialty programs of Neuro-Modulation/Electroconvulsive Therapy and Complex Medical Detoxification.

With this varied experience I bring well-rounded perspectives of the working Psychiatric Nurse.  I am passionate about being a Registered Psychiatric Nurse and have a strong, unwavering belief in the abilities of RPNs in community and the importance of the CRPNA as a regulatory body under the Health Professions Act (HPA).

I have volunteer experience as CPRNA provincial treasurer, executive officer, and on various committees such as Education Committee, Personnel Committee, Recognition and Awards Committee to name a few.

Not only do I believe my years of working experience in various areas but also my ability to question, to listen, to disagree and to engage in meaningful discussion as to issues or topics concerning regulatory practice of CRPNA and psychiatric nurses.  I do not believe I have any potential, real or perceived conflict of interest but in full disclosure I have a private practice in the area of mental health and wellness and additionally I work with Alberta Health Services as a staff nurse.

I would be honored to continue to work for another term as a council member and would appreciate your consideration and vote in our upcoming election!

Sharon Martin, RPN

I completed my Diploma Higher Education in Mental Health Nursing at The University of Central Lancashire, UK in April 2000 and then was successful in completing the BSc in Psychosocial Interventions for Psychosis at the University of Manchester, UK focusing on Family Interventions, Early Intervention and Clinical Supervision 2007.

In the UK I worked within both Adult and Child and Adolescent Inpatient and Community Mental Health teams before moving to Canada in Feb 2008.
Since moving to Canada I have worked within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Calgary initially within an adolescent day treatment program providing case management, individual, family, Milieu and group therapy.

I became the Instructor for Child and Adolescent Mental health Services at South Health Campus in September 2012 prior to the opening of the newly built hospital.  This provided me with the exciting opportunity of taking a leadership role in the development of the mental health services and programming at the South Health Campus, which included the development of an eight week staff orientation/training program.

I am passionate about the profession of Psychiatric Nursing, since commencing this position I have been able to develop an ongoing orientation and staff training program which focuses on building and developing the competencies and skills nurses require which are specific to mental health and psychiatric nursing.  As an advocate for least restrictive interventions for our patients, I have collaborated with our Protective Services Team at SHC and developed a simulation program focusing on reducing patient trauma during patient escalations. The eSIM training program has been successful in consolidating the individuals and teams knowledge of the evidence base and increased their competence and confidence in managing escalations on the unit.

To promote this training to a wider audience, I successfully submitted an abstract and presented a video presentation at Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada 2015 Simulation Summit.  More recently I facilitated a workshop, along with the South Health Campus eSIm Coordinator, Protective Services Manager and a Protective Services Peace Officer at the The 22nd International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions World Congress.

I have continued to be involved with service and program development at a leadership level, I sit on the CAAMHP Collaborative Problem Solving Planning Committee, the Calgary Zone Addiction and Mental Health Collaborative Problem Planning Committee, Inpatient Education Framework Committee and Chair the Inpatient Educators Committee.  I have previously been a part of the CAAMHP Standards and Guidelines Committee, The CAAMHP Seclusion & Restraint Working Group and the CAAMHP Inpatient SCM Documentation Suite Working Group.

I would like the opportunity develop and expand my leadership abilities and pursuing a more active role, advocating for Mental Health and the Profession of Registered Psychiatric Nurses as specialist area of nursing practice .  I would be honoured to have the opportunity to advocate for the profession and change at a government, public and stakeholder level, by actively participating as a member of the CRPNA Provincial Council.
